Winter days are mild and evenings are cool, in the tourism office's words.1
Sunset is worked out for the 15th of each month on Morocco time, GMT+1 all year, although the clock moves to GMT during Ramadan. Day length is for Ouzoud. Seasons come from the Moroccan National Tourism Office, because no weather station lies near the falls.
Spring and autumn are the months the tourism office points to, but a day trip works in every season if you plan the heat, the layers and the clock. Here is how each stretch of the year plays out.

What the tourism office says about timing
If you ask when to see the Ouzoud waterfalls, the Moroccan National Tourism Office gives a clear answer for the Azilal area: March to May and September to November.1 The same office says summer is very hot there, and that winter days are mild while the evenings turn cool.1 It gives the identical window for Marrakech, the city where a day trip to the falls begins.2
That makes spring and autumn the simple rule to plan around. Walking down to the pool and back up the steps is a physical day, and moderate air helps. Our own day is listed as a moderate hike, with closed-toe walking shoes recommended.
None of the sources we use publishes a month-by-month water table for the falls, so this page does not invent one. What it can do is lay the tourism office's seasons beside the practical side of the trip: the early start, the long drive, the hours on foot and the clothes that suit each stretch of the year.
Season by season
What the tourism office says, and what it means for your day
| Season | Tourism office | For your day |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | March to May is favoured1 | Mild walking weather and a light layer for spray |
| Summer | Very hot1 | Water time at midday, shade and an early start |
| Autumn | September to November is favoured1 | Soft light and a jacket for the ride home |
| Winter | Mild days, cool evenings1 | Layers and a look at recent photos of the flow |
The middle column is the tourism office's wording for the Azilal area; the last column is our reading of it for a day trip.
Spring, when the walk is at its easiest
March to May is the first half of the tourism office's window.1 The valley around the falls is a farming landscape, and the listing for our day mentions scenic trails through olive groves. Those trails are the part of the day that spring suits best. The air is mild for walking, and the boat ride at the foot of the falls is a gentle way to spend a warm afternoon.
A spring day still starts early. Pickup in Marrakech is at about 7:30 to 8:00 AM, the drive is about 3 hours each way with a rest stop, and the return is at about 7:00 PM. That long day is easy to carry in mild weather. Bring a light layer for the spray at the pool and for the ride home.
Rain can change a mountain day, so keep your plans flexible. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, with a full refund, gives you room to wait for a clear forecast. Choosing an option with that cover is the cheapest insurance on the whole trip, and it costs nothing to ask before you pay. If the forecast turns, you can move the date instead of losing the booking.

Summer, and how a day trip copes with the heat
The tourism office is blunt: summer is very hot in the Azilal area.1 That does not rule out a day trip, but it changes how you spend it. The pool at the foot of the falls, the boat ride and the shade of the terraces are the cool part of the day, and the climb back up is the hot part.
The newest English reviews of our day, written in summer, include a solo traveller who calls the boat ride a good way to cool off and a guest who mentions the drive in an air-conditioned minibus. These are single comments, not a rule, but they show how summer visitors cope: water in the middle of the day and a cool vehicle on the road.
Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, and keep the longest walk for the cooler hours of the morning. If your dates are flexible, a spring or autumn day gives you the same falls with less effort in the heat.

Autumn and the return of mild days
September to November is the second half of the tourism office's window.1 Autumn arrives after the hot months, and the air softens while the landscape is still dry and golden. It is a pleasant season for the pool, the boat and a long lunch above the cascade.
If you are searching for the falls in November, the date fits the advice: the tourism office lists the month inside its favoured window.1 Evenings can already feel cool, and the drive home runs into the dusk, with the return to Marrakech at about 7:00 PM on our day.
Pack a light jacket for the ride home; the tourism office describes cool evenings in winter.1 A scarf or a thin fleece weighs nothing and saves a chilly hour in the van. Autumn light is also kind to photographs, with long shadows on the red cliffs in the late part of the visit.

Winter in the High Atlas foothills
Winter days are mild and evenings are cool, in the tourism office's words.1 The same office describes the climate further inland as continental rather than Mediterranean,3 and the falls lie in the mountain interior, so treat the day as a mountain day and not a coastal one.
Dress in layers that you can add in the morning and remove at midday. A waterproof shell is more useful than a heavy coat, because the day involves walking, stairs and spray as well as waiting. That is what to wear at the Ouzoud waterfalls in winter: layers, a shell and shoes that grip wet stone.
Water is the open question in winter. The falls are fed by a stream, and a stream's flow follows the weather of the weeks before your visit. The Ourika listing says plainly that its waterfall is a natural mountain stream whose flow varies with season and rainfall, and the same logic applies to any High Atlas stream, so look at recent photos near your date.

Rainbows, mist and the light on the water
Searches for the falls often add the word rainbow, and it is easy to see why. Where a tall cascade throws spray into sunlight, a rainbow can form in the mist, and the wide pool and the red gorge give it a backdrop. A rainbow at the Ouzoud waterfalls needs the sun behind you and spray in front, which is why a bright midday matters more than an overcast morning. Nothing in the sources we use promises one at a given hour, so treat it as a bonus on a bright day.
The light you meet is set by the shape of the trip. Our day plans about 4 hours at the falls, reached after the long drive. That puts the visit in the middle of the day, when the sun stands high over the gorge. Visitors who choose the self-guided option can slow down and wait for the sun to reach the spray.
For photographs, the viewpoints above and below the cascade give different angles, and the walkway near the pool gives a third. Keep your phone in a dry pouch when you are near the spray, and wipe the lens before each shot.
Dates, clocks and Ramadan
Morocco keeps GMT+1 time, and the tourism office says it moves to GMT during the month of Ramadan.4 Pickup times, sunset and opening hours all follow the clock in force, so confirm the exact pickup time on your voucher when your dates fall in that month.
Public holidays can change how a rural day feels, from the number of local families at the falls to the hours of the cafes. The tourism office lists the national holidays on its practical-information page; read them against your dates before you book.
If the date matters, choose an option with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and check a forecast for the mountains as well as for Marrakech. A hot city morning does not always mean a hot valley, and a clear city sky does not always mean a clear gorge.
