Quick look
The Ouzoud waterfalls in Morocco's High Atlas are a cascade that the tourism office names first among the natural wonders of the area.3 Most pages quote one height and move on, but the sources do not agree, and a careful reader should see both numbers. The height of the Ouzoud waterfalls depends on who is measuring.
The tourism office describes a 100-metre waterfall dropping into a chasm.1 The highlights of our Ouzoud listing give the falls as 110 m, and other listings for the same trip say 110 m in their own highlights too. We show both figures as written and pick neither. If you need one number for a caption, take the tourism office's 100-metre figure, since it is the official one.1
The tourism office also lists the falls as a day trip of about 40 minutes from the town of Azilal.2 It adds that the Azilal area is worth about 3 days, which tells you how much else there is around the cascade.5
Fact sheet
| Fact | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Height, tourism office | 100 m1 | Tourism office |
| Height, our listing | 110 m | Listing highlights |
| Time from Azilal | About 40 minutes2 | Tourism office |
| Marrakech to Azilal | 2 h 36 min, 162.3 km6 | Tourism office |
| Best months | March to May, September to November8 | Tourism office |
| Our day | 11 - 12 hours | Listing record |
| Time at the falls | About 4 hours | Listing itinerary |
The two height figures differ, so both are shown; the tourism office and the listing highlights are the only sources for these rows.
The tourism office gives the road link from Marrakech to Azilal as 2 h 36 min and 162.3 km on its Marrakech page, and 2 h 40 min and 161.7 km on its Azilal page.6,7 It lists Ouzoud as about 40 minutes from Azilal, so the road link and the last stretch together give the scale of the trip.2
Our own day from Marrakech is described by the record as about 3 hours of driving each way with a rest stop, and the itinerary lists a van leg of 45 minutes, a coffee break of 25 minutes at Ouled Khellouf and a van leg of 2 hours before the falls. The two sets of figures come from different sources and different starting points, so we do not merge them.
We hold no official figure for the flow of the falls through the year, so we state none. The tourism office gives March to May and September to November as the best time to go to the Azilal area, calls summer very hot and says winter days are mild and evenings cool.8
Distances in the sources
The wider area is rich. The tourism office names the natural bridge of Imi N'Ifri near Demnate, the lake of Bin El Widane, the gorges of the Ahansal wadi and the Tamga reserve beside the falls.3
It places the lake of Bin El Ouidane 27 km north of Azilal and lists water sports there.11 It also says dinosaurs lived in the vicinity of Azilal in the secondary era, with the Demnate Nature Reserve working to preserve their bones.13
Mount M'Goun, which the tourism office calls Morocco's 2nd highest mountain at 4068 metres, rises in the same region.12 The falls are the most visited sight in this landscape, but they are far from the only one.
The tourism office describes Azilal as sitting at a crossroads in the heartland of Morocco, with a wide variety of landscapes that run from the waterfalls of Ouzoud to the valley of Ait Bouguemez, and as lying in the centre of the Atlas Mountains.14,15 That is the setting for the cascade: a mountain interior, a long way from the coast, with a day trip from Marrakech as the simplest way in.

The macaques of the trails
Compare this featureThe highlights of our listing promise wild Barbary macaques near the falls. IUCN says the Barbary macaque is the only one of 20 macaque species to occur in Africa, that it is found in Morocco and Algeria and that it is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.4
Our listing asks guests to keep a safe distance from the macaques and follow the guide. Our page on the macaques covers what to do when one approaches.
IUCN also says that deforestation and forest degradation in the rural mountain areas of Morocco and Algeria threaten endangered species such as the Barbary macaque, and that macaques are vital to disperse seeds in the forest.16,17 It adds that the animals attract a large number of tourists to Morocco every year, which is a good reason to behave well around them and never to feed them.18

The tourism office says Morocco is on GMT+1 time, and on GMT during the month of Ramadan, so restate your pickup time with the operator if your dates fall in that month.19 It says that a little further inland the climate leaves the Mediterranean mildness and becomes continental, which is the case for the mountain interior around the falls.20
For getting about, the tourism office says taxis in Marrakech are orange, and that coaches can pick travellers up from the train station and reach even the most remote village.21,22 It lists the Markoub app as a way to buy coach tickets from a smartphone.23
None of this changes a guided day, because pickup is at your hotel or riad at about 7:30 to 8:00 AM, but it matters if you plan to reach the Azilal area on your own.
The tourism office lists the Ourika Valley as a day trip from Marrakech of about 1 hour, the Agafay desert at about 45 minutes and Essaouira at about 2.5 hours.24 Our Ouzoud day is the long one: the record says to expect about 3 hours of driving each way.
That is why the day runs 11 - 12 hours in total, with about 4 hours at the falls, and why the Ourika comparison page is worth reading if the time on the road worries you. The sources agree on the shape of the trip even where they differ on the height of the drop.
Our Ouzoud day plans about 4 hours at the falls, with lunch, a guided tour, a boat cruise and hiking. The facts above are the background to that time.
The activity level is a moderate hike, and closed-toe walking shoes are recommended. The steps and the spray ask for good footwear. Keep your distance from the Barbary macaques and follow your guide.
If you want the full picture in person, ask your guide to point out the viewpoints over the cascades and the boat landing at the foot of the falls.
